FAQs

Are Finnmark saunas full spectrum infrared?

Yes. Finnmark Designs infrared and hybrid saunas are full spectrum, meaning they include near, mid, and far infrared to deliver a wider range of therapeutic heating effects. Full spectrum is designed to support deeper heat penetration, faster core warming, and a broader wellness experience than far-infrared-only saunas.

Because full spectrum targets multiple depth layers of heat absorption, it can be more effective for people who want maximum sweat, recovery, relaxation, and overall therapeutic benefit in shorter sessions.

What is the maximum temperature, and why does it matter?

Finnmark Designs has engineered some of the only infrared saunas on the market that can reach up to 170°F. This matters because higher, stable infrared temperatures help you reach a deeper sweat and may help activate heat shock proteins (HSPs), which are associated with cellular resilience, recovery, and overall wellness benefits.

Not everyone needs maximum heat every session. Many customers use lower temperatures more frequently for comfort. The benefit of a higher-capable sauna is having the headroom to reach stronger results when desired.

How long does it take to heat up?

Heat-up time depends on your room temperature, electrical supply, model, and the temperature you’re targeting. In general, most customers see the sauna reach a comfortable “start sweating” range in about 20–40 minutes, and peak temperatures can take longer if you’re pushing toward the upper range (especially in colder garages or basements).

For the best experience:

  • Start the sauna 25–35 minutes before your session if you like a hotter cabin.
  • Close the door fully during warm-up and avoid frequent opening.
  • In cold rooms, allow extra time or consider warming the room slightly before starting.
How does infrared compare to a traditional sauna?

Traditional saunas primarily heat the air (often 170–220°F) using hot rocks and/or steam. That can feel intense, and some people find high-heat air uncomfortable to breathe.

Infrared saunas use infrared light to heat your body more directly. A common way to describe it is:

  • Infrared: more direct body heating and deeper warmth at lower air temperatures.
  • Traditional: hotter air temperature, steam potential, and a classic sauna feel.

Finnmark’s heater coverage is designed to surround the body so you warm evenly rather than relying on just one heater location.

Why does heater placement matter, and how are Finnmark heaters laid out?

Heater placement matters because the goal of infrared is to warm your body evenly and efficiently. If a sauna has heaters only behind you, for example, your front side may not warm as effectively, which can reduce sweat output and overall therapeutic effect.

Finnmark models are designed with multi-directional heater coverage, commonly including back heaters plus additional heaters positioned to improve full-body warmth.

Are Finnmark saunas low EMF and low ELF?

Yes. Finnmark Designs places a strong emphasis on electrical safety and low EMF/ELF performance. Their Spectrum Plus™ infrared heaters are UL tested and designed to be extremely low in radiation output.

Important note: Any powered electrical device can produce some level of EMF. What matters is the design quality, component selection, shielding, and testing. Finnmark’s engineering choices (including how power is routed and where certain components are placed) are specifically intended to reduce exposure in the seating area.

Are there any plastics in the sauna, and will they off-gas?

There are some small plastic components used where appropriate (for example: the controller housing, accessory outlet components, certain screw covers). These materials are used in a limited way and are not located where they are intended to be exposed to extreme temperatures.

Plastic materials generally do not off-gas until ambient temperatures reach around 212°F, which is higher than the typical operating range of these saunas. Finnmark sauna operating temperatures remain below that level, making off-gassing risk minimal in normal use.

Is any glue used in Finnmark saunas?

Yes. All saunas use some amount of glue. It is not realistically possible to assemble a sauna cabin without any adhesive use. The key difference between brands is where the glue is used and the quality of the glue.

Finnmark Designs uses very minimal glue within the sauna cabin. The glue is primarily located behind the cedar tongue-and-groove slats to secure them. The adhesive used is non-toxic and rated safe up to 250°F.

Many lower-quality brands use cheaper adhesives that may be “non-toxic” at room temperature but can begin to release odor or compounds at much lower heat levels. Finnmark also consulted with an environmental testing facility and an environmental biologist to help guide safer material choices.

Are the doors glass or acrylic?

Finnmark sauna doors are made with premium tempered glass (not acrylic). Glass is used because it is more heat-stable, more scratch-resistant, and maintains clarity over time compared to acrylic. It also provides a more premium look and feel while holding up better to repeated heating and cooling cycles.

Does the sauna have removable leveling feet?

Yes. All Finnmark Designs saunas include screw-in removable leveling feet designed to help stabilize and level the sauna on uneven floors.

  • Foot size (all models): 3 inches tall by 2 inches wide
  • Hybrid models: 5 feet
  • 2–3 person models: 6 feet
  • 3–4 person models: 8 feet

Tip: Consider purchasing inexpensive furniture sliders before your sauna arrives. You may never need to move it, but if you do, that small investment can save a lot of effort and help protect your floor.

How easy is setup and assembly?

Assembly is designed to be quick and straightforward. Most customers assemble their Finnmark sauna with two people in about one hour.

What to expect:

  • No specialty tools are required for the main assembly.
  • A screwdriver is typically needed for the door handle and some panel connections.
  • Panels are pre-wired and connect together for a clean, guided install.

If you want a smoother install, have a clear assembly area ready and bring the boxes near the final location before you begin.

Do I need ventilation, and what clearance is required around the sauna?

No external ventilation system is required. Finnmark saunas include built-in fresh air intake and exhaust vents. For proper airflow and access, you still need a small amount of clearance around the sauna.

Recommended spacing:

  • Infrared models: 2–4 inches of space on the sides (and avoid pushing the back tightly against a wall).
  • Hybrid models: 4–6 inches of space on the sides for airflow and service access.
  • Ceiling clearance: at least 6 inches above the sauna.

Ceiling clearance is important because Finnmark places the power supply in the ceiling area for engineering and EMF-reduction reasons. You need adequate space to safely connect wiring and allow access if service is ever needed.

For built-ins: we recommend leaving a removable trim/molding access lip so a contractor can access the ceiling power area in the future if needed.

What is infrared emissivity, and what is Finnmark’s rating?

Emissivity is a measure of how efficiently a surface emits infrared energy. Higher emissivity generally means more effective infrared heat transfer.

Finnmark infrared emissivity rating: 0.997, which is extremely high and supports efficient infrared delivery during sessions.

What is the sauna bench weight limit?

Finnmark benches are reinforced with extra support brackets for strength and stability.

Bench weight rating: 380 pounds.

If you expect heavier loads or frequent movement, keep the sauna level and avoid rocking or shifting the unit during use to preserve long-term structural integrity.

How is the sauna delivered?

Finnmark Designs saunas ship via LTL freight on a pallet. Your sauna is palletized, wrapped, and secured before pickup. Once shipped, a Bill of Lading (BOL) is generated.

Freight delivery works differently than small-package carriers:

  • Your shipment can be traced and tracked, but the best delivery indicator is when your local hub receives the pallet and contacts you.
  • When the local hub receives your sauna, a dispatcher will contact you at the phone number you provided to schedule a delivery appointment.
  • The hub typically will not release the sauna unless they speak with you and confirm a delivery window.

Tip: Ask the dispatcher to have the driver call you about 30 minutes before arrival to reduce waiting time. This is also the time to share special instructions like gate codes.

Truck access note: Delivery is usually made by a semi-trailer. If your home cannot be accessed by a large semi (tight roads, steep grade, narrow driveway), tell the dispatcher so a smaller truck can be dispatched. This may add 1–2 business days.

Delivery method: Finnmark includes liftgate service. The driver is typically paid for curbside delivery. Many drivers will place it in your garage if it’s accessible, but obstacles like long driveways, stairs, gravel, or steep slopes can limit how far they can go.

Inspection requirement: Inspect the shipment before signing. If you see any damage to the pallet or boxes, note it on the delivery receipt and take photos immediately.

How many boxes does the sauna arrive in, and how is it packaged?

Finnmark saunas typically arrive as three boxes strapped to a pallet. This packaging method keeps panels protected and organized for assembly.

What maintenance and cleaning is required?

Basic cleaning keeps your sauna looking new and helps preserve the cedar. Finnmark uses Western Canadian cedar that is air-dried to retain natural antimicrobial benefits.

Exterior cleaning:

  • Use a microfiber cloth with a small amount of water to remove dust.
  • For wood care, use a non-toxic beeswax wood conditioner periodically.
  • Do not use chemical cleaners on the glass. Use a microfiber cloth and water for smudges.

Interior cleaning (recommended every 20–25 sessions depending on sweat volume):

  • Use a microfiber cloth, organic orange oil, and 320+ grit sandpaper.
  • Lightly apply orange oil to the area and let it sit 10–15 minutes.
  • Once dry, lightly sand with 320+ grit to refresh the wood surface.

Finnmark uses thick cedar louvers, so light sanding does not affect durability or structural strength when done correctly.

What are the most common wellness goals people use Finnmark saunas for?

Many customers use Finnmark saunas as part of a consistent wellness routine. Common goals include:

  • Relaxation, stress reduction, and improved sleep quality
  • Post-workout recovery and muscle relaxation
  • Circulation and cardiovascular support
  • Regular sweating for wellness routines and detox-style support
  • Skin support (especially when using red light therapy features)
  • Comfortable heat exposure without the intensity of very hot air

As with any wellness product, consistency matters. Most users find the best results from regular use (for example, several sessions per week) rather than occasional use.
